Back on the 3rd of Febuary this year, I shot a new Canon commercial for Dentsu Beijing. At the time I couldn’t say what the product was for but I’m happy to reveal it now. My earlier blog entry mentioned that the Shoot took place in Hong Kong. This was because we were filming actor Daniel Wu. The Production also made use of local Wire Stunt specialists which was one of the highlights of the job. Please see my earlier entry here for more.

The local Hong Kong Crew were excellent and I have to say, very obliging and thoughtful. We completed the filming and headed back to Singapore for post. Blackmagic-Design Singapore handled the entire post process. Tammy Quay edited the TVC for me. There were several edits in the end – all of which were fun to watch. Finally, Hiroshi Yoda, ECD from Dentsu Beijing uploaded 2 versions for review in China. After a weekend break, we received feedback from China and committed to one version. Adrian Ooi graded the images in 2K using Da Vinci Resolve from the 35mm film original. Then it was over to Damian Yang (lead compositor) to remove all the Wire Rigs, Green Screens etc. His team of 3D guys built various models for us including a highly detailed model of Daniel Wu himself. The Camcorder and an EOS 5D MKII were also built. I composited together a huge panorama of a lake I shot in New Zealand and handed it to Boon Hock who further enhanced the snow peaked mountains etc. This formed the background of our Green Screen set. Animated water and a camera move made the background come alive.

Audio again was handled by AMX including the original music composition. I had sent them references to various drumming and percussion groups as influence. Over all the effect of this TVC I think is provocative and strong while minimising the tech content as much as possible. It’s alway difficult to make a TVC like this and not have it feel like a cold heartless, feature rich visual essay but I think the music helps to place your opinions in a different but positive direction. One that is perhaps Chinese in nature?!
